<image:caption>Saturday morning came, and my cousin Carlton picked me up. We followed my uncle’s car to the community center. I was a little nervous because I did not know what to expect. The first thing I noticed when we walked in was that there was a lot of Black men. There were also a few familiar faces of kids I knew from throughout Boston. They joined hands and a young Black man in a sweatsuit blessed the food. This made me feel comfortable. We all fixed plates and were instructed to sit with strangers. Then we were asked to talk about what jobs and talents we held. We were asked how we could help build a stronger community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My aunt ended up pulling me out of the car because I was paralyzed in my seat. Then she rapidly walked me over to door 1448E. This number remains buried in my brain. The door opened revealing a woman dressed in an all white nursing uniform. She looked like a rat killer. The grim-faced woman let us in and told me in her thundering voice to come in with her. I knew who this was. I heard about the lady in white. Lost in thought, the nurse pulled my hand in the direction of a room. She closed the door behind us, ignoring my screaming. She was the lady who circumcised females in my village. I lay down on something that looked like a table. I removed my clothes like she ordered me to. At that moment, I felt like my life was taken away from me and there was nothing I could do to stop it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dominicans have such a pride that we do not like to mix with our Haitian neighbors because we believe we are superior. Years have taught us that Black people should be slaves or people of poverty, so we have made up our minds that we are not Black. We can be different colors like mulata, india, mestiza, morena, but never Black. We can be any shade of black, but not “Black.” We have always believed that the more white we look, the better. “Super Miss White” was like being a superhero. You have only to look at Sammy Sosa’s gradual lightening over the years to see these beliefs in action. My family was not as intense as Mr. Sosa; instead of our skin, we changed our hair. I got my first perm when I was 9 years old so I could look “más decente,” or at least that’s what my family used to say. When I was 14 years old, I fell into the system of the Department of Children & Families (DCF).</image:caption>

<image:caption>My uncles were just a few of the people in my family who had fallen victim to a street-dictated lifestyle leading to various addictions, mental health issues, and multiple incarcerations. Ultimately, the immutable factors holding my family in bondage led to the loss of my family's home. The more my family disintegrated around me, the more I leaned heavily onto the surrounding community, spending immeasurable hours volunteering at local shelters, parks, gardens and many more locations. Interacting with residents at Pine Street Inn, preparing food at the Greater Boston Food Bank, and farming at the Food Project were not completely selfless endeavors, but a way for me to escape the brokenness of my home, and find stability through my friends.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This journey, or should I say the start of my new double life, all started in my freshman year of high school, the moment it hit me how important it is to code-switch. Back then, I don’t think I would be in this position that I am now. I was a rowdy kid, fresh out of middle school, who only spoke one of two ways: loud English or loud Spanish. There was no in between for me. There was no turning the slang on and off at a moment’s notice. One day, I was even given an opportunity to fix it. This happened at a school assembly. I was speaking into the microphone and without even realizing it, I was cussing and speaking in slang. Mr. Walker, our principal, immediately called me into his office and told me that I had two options. One was either to write an essay about why code-switching is important, much like this one. Or two: to call my mother and tell her why I was in trouble myself. I would assume most kids would have chosen the essay to spare the lectures and punishments from their parents, but of course, me being the hardhead I was, I chose the phone call.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“This issue has been known for so long, and it's just now being addressed. The school is still accepting transfer students to this day. And if you knew you were closing us down, why would you admit new students? A transfer can be very overwhelming, so why make it twice as hard?” Many more accusations were made. However, our education did not seem to matter to them. After I finished speaking, the room flooded with applause. I’ll never forget the rush I felt from standing up for myself and the ones I cared about. From that day, I continued going to every meeting. Whether it was in front of the school committee or the community, I did not miss any chance I had to speak up. I wasn't scared of them anymore.</image:caption>
